Private
Balloon Pilot licensing in Australia is administered by the Australian
Ballooning Federation

full details of the training requirements for private licences in Australia is
contained in the Federations operations Manual. The following is a summary of
the requirements as of 2006. Please check with the ABF for any updates.
Student
Pilot
-
Be
a financial member of the Australian Ballooning Federation (A.B.F.)
-
Read,
speak and understand the English language.
-
Sixteen
years of age or older.
-
Have
no known medical conditions that would prevent the safe operation of a
balloon.
Private
Pilot
-
Read,
speak and understand the English language.
-
Seventeen
years of age or older.
-
Have
no known medical conditions that would prevent the safe operation of a
balloon.
-
Complete
at least 15 hours of instructional time of which:
-
At
least 9 hours is dual flight time with an A.B.F. Instructor.

A
maximum of 1 hour of tethered flight;
-
A
minimum of 2 hours of solo flight;
-
Pass
written tests on Navigation, Air Law, Aerostatics, Land-owner Relations
& Meteorology.

Pass
an oral and flight test given by an A.B.F. Examiner.
Commercial
Pilot
Commercial
Pilot licencing in Australia is administered by the Civil Aviation Safety
Authority (CASA)

The
requirements for the commercial pilots licence balloons is specified in the
Civil Aviation Regulations 1988, Division 11, 5.138 – 5.148.
In
summary the requirements are as follows:

Read,
speak and understand the English language.

Eighteen
years of age or older.

Hold
and have held an A.B.F. Private Pilots Certificate or Overseas Equivalent
for at least 12 months.

Pass
a Class 1 or Class 2 medical examination conducted by a designated medical
examiner.

Complete
8 hours of dual training with a CASA instructor.
-
Complete
flights totalling 75 hours or more as pilot in command.
-
Pass
a written test given by the CASA.
-
Pass
an oral and flight test given by a CASA approved person or testing officer.
